MacFarlane Park Teachers at the SDHC Math Dinner in April 2012
Ms. Miller, Ms. MacDonald, Ms. Desmond, and Ms. Djahandari had so much fun at the Tampa Yacht Club recently at a Hillsborough County Math Council dinner in April. Ms. MacDonald and Ms. Miller were lucky to win a door prize of math manipulatives for their classrooms!
Away we go...into Fourth quarter!
An exciting new resource for parents that I found online is at http://www.math.com/parents/articles/helpmath.html
It is an interesting article about the ways parents can help students learn math outside of school. You may want to use it to supplement the standards being taught in school with some fun at home or on the go activities!
This year an exciting new feature of the Gifted Program at MacFarlane Park is our participation in the new National Geographic science curriculum! The Teachers of the Gifted have been assisting students with math, science and reading throughout the school year.
"Whether kids realize it or not, they loosely apply the scientific method throughout their school day -- from transferring force from their hands to close a door (Newton's third law) to empowering fluid dynamics to send water through pipes to rinse soapy hands. This Newspaper In Education curriculum guide invites teachers and parents to help students look more closely at the science behind everyday activities."

Try out some of the science related activities and let me know how they turned out! Look for the SMATH (Science in Math) in our world. It's everywhere!
Mrs. Desmond met Gov. Rick Scott at a Dinner in September 2011
At Saddlebrook Resort for the Pasco County Economic Development Council's 25th Anniversary Dinner I was able to speak with Gov. Scott - about FOOD! It was a wonderful evening.
Fifth Grade Independent Investigation Model (IIM) Program
Monday mornings will be a busy time for fifth grade AGP students while they learn the IIM model of research skills. This workshop will be beneficial while they work toward their Exhibition projects for the spring. We will meet in the Computer Lab each Monday throughout the school year. Everyone has been working VERY hard on their Energy projects - we are in the final stretch and will be creating products to share with others in the next few weeks..
